Edisto Island

Edisto Island

Laid-back island retreat with charming homes, beaches, and nature.

Welcome to Edisto Island

It is a small residential community located an hour southwest of Charleston, and approximately half way to beautiful Savannah, Georgia. One of the so-called "Sea Islands", this island paradise was once, and continues to be, a popular coastal vacation destination for South Carolinians looking to escape the summer heat. Marshlands, estuaries and mature oaks trees dominate the landscape, and are home to a plethora of local flora and fauna.

The community is home to a single grocery store, one golf course, and some Edisto Island rentals in the form of condos and timeshare units. Other highlights include scenic Edisto Beach State Park, historic Botany Bay Plantation and the Edisto Island Serpentarium.

The rustic feel of Edisto Island makes up much of it's appeal. Here you can find chic cottages next to stately mansions. The lack of commercialism and development makes this one of the last refuges for those seeking a semi-rural retreat in the area.

There's a certain laid back lifestyle that comes with owning Edisto Island real estate. Conservation efforts have preserved much of the natural landscape which has also helped to fight off mass commercial development. You won't find luxury resorts or hotels here, just charming homes and friendly neighbors; many whose families have lived on Edisto for generations.

Homes for sale in Edisto Island are also relatively affordable when compared to the nearby communities of Kiawah/Seabrook IslandJames Island and Folly Beach. Homebuyers can expect to find mobile homes and rustic cottages for under $100,000 whereas prime beachfront properties can cost well into the millions.

Amenities Near Edisto Island, SC Real Estate

Many of Edisto Island's charms come from its gorgeous natural scenery. Edisto Beach State Park is a popular destination for locals. This family-friendly recreational area offers beachside camping, walking trails, a public boat ramp and excellent fishing. Another wonderful daytrip is a boat ride to Wilkinson's Landing or "Shell Island" as it is known by locals. As the name would suggest, you can find lots of stunning shells scattered along the shores.

A visit to the Botany Bay Plantation Heritage Preserve offers scenic sights and historic delights. Take a self-guided tour and stroll along the wooden boardwalk for breathtaking views of the Atlantic coastline from the beach.

One cannot live on Edisto Island without a visit to the Edisto Island Serpentarium. The entertaining exhibits filled with live snakes, gators and other reptiles are entertaining for all ages. The best times to visit are at noon and 4pm because that's when they feed "Big George", the sepentarium's largest resident alligator.
