When in Charleston, you are never too far from museums, studios, and theaters. Thanks to Charleston’s world-class arts scene, there is plenty to see in this cultured city. One part of the peninsula is even referred to as “Gallery Row.” Here are 5 Charleston art galleries that are definitely worth your visit, whether you’re a visitor or a local.

John C Doyle Gallery

The John C Doyle Art Gallery, located at 125 Church Street, features dozens of original, private, and high quality reproduced works in categories such as “low country”, “wildlife”, “blues and jazz”, and “architectural.”

The gallery was founded by John Doyle who was born in Charleston and was internationally known for his energetic paintings. The Doyle gallery also features works from local artist Margaret Petterson. The Doyle Gallery is open Tuesday though Saturday from 11am to 5pm.

Principle Gallery

The Principle Gallery museum shares museum quality works from established domestic and international artists in styles such as classical realism and contemporary. Visit this gallery for monthly shows that feature works from a diverse roster of artists, including Nancy Bush, Joseph Lorusso, and Jeremy Mann.

The Principle Gallery showcases a monthly solo gallery and has been mentioned in over 60 publications. You can find the Principle Gallery at 125 Meeting Street.

Mary Martin Gallery

Some of the best fine art in Charleston can be found at the Mary Martin Gallery. Located on 103 Broad Street, the Mary Martin Gallery features dozens of art artifacts, such as paintings, sculptures, jewelry, ceramics, furniture, and photography.

The gallery is run by Mary Martin, who has traveled around the world exploring fine art. Many of those international artists have filled her gallery with works, and the gallery now features over 50 master artists from local and abroad. Works in the gallery range from intuitive to abstract to realistic.

Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art

Part of the College of Charleston School of the Arts, Halsey is a contemporary art museum. The Halsey gallery is located at 161 Calhoun Street on the College of Charleston campus. The Halsey gallery hosts five to seven exhibits a year, and hosts year-round lectures, screenings, and special events.

Not only does work at Halsey include international artists, but it includes local College of Charleston students as well. Works at Halsey are bold, original, and can easy pique your interest.

Edward Dare Gallery

Located in a charming 18th century building at 31 Broad Street is the Edward Dare Gallery. The Edward Dare gallery features books, fine crafts, jewelry, paintings, pottery, sculptures, glass, and more. Enjoy works by local Lowcountry artists, with many works featuring anything Lowcountry, coastal, and/or southern.

The Edward Dare gallery is constantly updated with new content, and events can be found throughout the year. Stop by the Edward Dare gallery anytime between 11 am to 5 pm, Monday through Saturday.
