Charleston, SC is a city known for its rich history, beautiful sights, friendly folks and delicious food that is enjoyed by visitors and locals alike. While visiting our beautiful city you may find Charleston restaurant suggestions in your guidebooks or in online forums.
Though many of our more famous restaurants here are delightful, they often require reservations several days in advance or have a formal atmosphere, which isn’t always appealing. You might wish you knew about some coveted local spots that you can bet your bottom dollar won’t be in your guidebooks.
Let Handsome Properties guide you through Charleston’s best restaurants, our local best-kept secrets and the amazing foods these unlikely places have to offer.
When we think Martha Lou’s Kitchen we think Southern. While it has received some press (for example, The New York Times), it’s just too good to leave out. This establishment, located at 1068 Morrison Drive, was founded by Mary Lou Gadsden over 30 years ago. The meats change each day and you can choose 2 to 3 extra southern sides. Martha Lou’s is a strictly “no frills” joint where good cookin’ is taken very seriously. (843) 577-9583
Located at 334 East Bay Street in the heart of downtown, this simple and tucked away Japanese restaurant has been a local favorite for many years. Family owned and run, you will receive a warm welcome from the owners working the sushi bar and be given a selection of the freshest ingredients. If they don’t have the freshest batch of sashimi surf clam, they won’t serve it. Start by enjoying their amazing combo Snomono, trust the chef’s selection of fresh fish over rice and finally, finish off your meal with their green tea ice cream. (843) 720-8568
This adorable bistro is located in South Windermere, at 90 Folly Road next to Earth Fare and has been in business for about 50 years. If you are a fellow Reuben aficionado, check this place out. Tomato pie enthusiast? Go there. Also check out their Sunday brunch and keep in mind, they are gluten-free friendly! (843) 766-0323
At 98 Broad Street, this super casual French bistro is like any delicious restaurant you might find in the middle of Paris. While small in size, Fast and French offers a diverse menu of French foods, French press coffee and all the accessories needed. Go for lunch or dinner any day of the week (closed Sunday). They offer different specials each day, but we suggest going on Thursday, because who doesn’t love fondue night? (843) 577-9797
