The nation’s flood insurance policies have been a popular topic ever since the aftermaths of Hurricanes Katrina and Sandy. The reality is these storms caused more damage than insurance companies could take on financially. As a result, the U.S. Congress passed the Biggert-Waters Flood Insurance Reform Act of 2012, which calls on the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to make changes to the way the National Flood Insurance Program is run in an attempt to make it more financially stable. These changes include major increases to insurance premiums and surcharges.

In Charleston, we understand all too well the importance of having flood insurance for our homes. Much of the downtown, historic section of Charleston is considered to be in a flood zone.
